Del Carmen Beach, Mal País
In Playa Carmen Mal Pais joins Santa Teresa and its live scene of surfers, lots of hotels, shops, restaurants and tourist facilities. On the other side, in the south of Malpaís, it is Cabo Blanco at the tip of the Nicoya peninsula.
It is a quiet community, scattered along a five-kilometer road that begins at “El Cruce,” the intersection of Cóbano Street that ends at Playa Carmen.
Many people refer to this whole coast as Mal Pais, so when you hear that Mal Pais is one of the best surf destinations in Costa Rica, it refers, in fact, to the beaches of Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen .

It is the quietest part of the combined villages of Santa Teresa and Malpaís. While in recent years Santa Teresa has seen a boom in development, Mal Pais has retained its relaxed atmosphere with long remnants of nature. The coast of Mal Pais presents many rocky sections with rare volcanic formations that create fascinating views. Forests with ancient trees extend to the edge of the sea, where rocky parts are interspersed with coves of sand, some composed entirely of small shells.
There is only a small selection of hotels in Mal Pais and there are no supermarkets or shops. However, many activities and sports are offered. In the south of Mal Pais is located the fishing port, which also serves as a starting point for fishing or diving tours.
Mal Pais is located near the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula with the marine sanctuary of Cabo Blanco. From a boat you can see dolphins, manta rays, sea turtles and whales. Hotels in Mal Pais and Santa Teresa can arrange tours.
Although Malpaís borders with the Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve there is no entrance to the park on this side. To explore the surroundings of Cabo Blanco you can do a canopy tour through the jungle at the edge of the nature reserve, or go horse riding.
