Apart from the evergreen forests found on the island the only other trees that grow here are the rubber tree, the wild cocoa tree and some shrubs. Along with some birds such as the eagle, black hawk, egret and phalarope, you can find some reptiles and common animals such as bales, boa constrictors, opossums, tree frogs, pigs, moths, beetles, bats, mosquitoes, rats and lizards.

According to research, it is believed that this island was formed about 50 million years ago when the tectonic plates of the earth moved and caused the island to emerge. The real beauty of Caño Island is not found on the surface but under water. The virgin waters of this island are some of the blueest in the country and are home to a spectacular variety of marine flora and fauna as well as glorious coral reefs. Named as one of the best dive sites in the world, the Caño Island Biological Reserve is also home to a wide variety of fish, whales and sharks.

With fantastic underwater visibility, one can see on any day sea turtles, dolphins, rays, moray eels, barracudas, tunas and grouper swimming along with a wide variety of sharks and humpback whales. When considered a reserve the number of divers is regulated and visitors are not allowed to remove any of the marine life either alive or dead. On the island there are camp sites with a station and boat trips can be arranged from Dominical or Bahia Drake.
